Our School

Leapwood Avenue Elementary School, UTK through grade five, is nestled in a suburban middle-class neighborhood in Carson, California.  We are a relatively small school with approvimately 250 students, of which 89% are of African-American descent.  Our language of instruction for all students is English. Diversity is a part of life at Leapwood. Time magazine highlighted the changing times in our community in an article titled "This is What a Perfectly Intergrated School Looked like in 1970".  https://time.com/3842407/school-desegregation-1970/ We are many decades past the era of intergration and continue to offer a safe and welcoming environment for all.

We pride ourselves on continued increases in our API to 764 in 2010.  The percentage of Leapwood students at grade level in English language arts and Math are 41% and 52% respectively.  Of our students, there are 56% who are economically disadvantaged and 15% who have a learning-disability.  Our autism learning program is renowned throughout Los Angeles, and known throughout the United States and Asia.

The Leapwood School Community’s mission is to provide the opportunity for students to appreciate cultural diversity, and become active learners in a safe and positive environment.  We will also implement rigorous curriculum that will not only be aligned with the state standards, but will be challenging and enriching enough so that students will be able to succeed throughout their school years.  We will encourage them to become productive, independent and responsible citizens of society.  Completing our mission successfully takes every stakeholder - parents, teachers, administrators, and students.
